FAIR WAGES AND SALARIES COMMISSION MEET SENIOR STAFF ASSOCIATION, UNIVERSITIES OF GHANA (SSA-UoG) OVER THEIR STRIKE ACTION.

The Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) on Monday 22nd January, 2024, met the leadership of the Senior Staff Association, Universities of Ghana (SSA UoG) on the back of the strike action declared by the Union on 17th of January, 2024.

The National President of the Association, Mr. Isaac Donkor, listed the two main issues, Pensions and Allowances that led to the Union’s decision to embark on the industrial action. On the issue of their Allowances, the leadership of SSA-UoG demanded a withdrawal of the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission’s (GTEC) letter instructing the management of various public universities to discontinue payment of overtime allowance for weekends and holidays work.

The Deputy Director General of GTEC, Professor Yayra Dzakadzie, assured the Union that his outfit will withdraw the letter by close of day the same day, allayed their fears and further pleaded with them to call off their strike action.

On the issue of Pensions, Mr. Hayford Amankwah from the National Pensions Regulatory Authority (NPRA), updated leadership of the Union that, payment for January to April had been effected and steps were being taken to clear the outstanding payment for June to December, 2023.

The Director of Grievances and Negotiations of FWSC, Professor Charles Adabo Oppong, pleaded with the SSA-UoG to call off the strike action and return to the negotiation table since the issues raised by the Union, the first one, demand for withdrawal of GTEC’s letter, had been fully resolved and the other issue, unpaid Pensions for 2023 is partially resolved.

Mr. Donkor in his closing remarks said his team will consult their constituents, brief them about the current development and revert to the Government Team.

The Commission is very hopeful that after this healthy and fruitful meeting, the SSA-UoG will call off their strike action.
