PRESS BRIEFING BY THE FAIR WAGES AND SALARIES COMMISSION ON THE INDUSTRIAL STRIKE ACTION BY TEACHER UNIONS OF GHANA

Mar 25, 2024

The Chief Executive of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) Ing. Benjamin Arthur, has implored GNAT, NAGRAT and other Teacher Unions of Ghana, to endeavour to call -off their industrial strike actions and resume to the negotiation table, given the fact that, it is only through dialogue and negotiations their grievances would be resolved.

Ing. Benjamin Arthur, further bemoaned the strike action taken by the teacher Unions of Ghana, considering their various demands government has acceded to, and the good faith demonstrated on the part of government throughout the various negotiation engagements with them.

Ing. Arthur, made these assertions in a press briefing organized by FWSC, in response to the strike action declared by the Teacher Unions, to embark on an indefinite Nationwide strike, effective 20th of March, 2024, over some allowances and also citing delays on the part of government.

Ing. Benjamin Arthur, refuted the allegation, suggesting that the government negotiation team was sluggish and however, indicated that the Government Team was able to reach an appreciable agreement with the Teacher Unions on ten (10) key negotiations items out of the sixteen (16) submitted for negotiations.

Mr. Arthur, further stressed on other six (6) outstanding proposed items by the Teacher Unions of Ghana and indicated that, his outfit does not have a jurisdictional mandate on their approvals, and therefore, has to secure further mandate from the Ministry of Finance since, FWSC cannot unilaterally grant approval for those proposals without recourse to the Finance Ministry.

The Chief Executive of the FWSC, therefore, used the rare privilege of the occasion to appeal to the general publics and parents whose children are currently affected to remain calm, since government on its part is demonstrating unwavering commitment in resolving the impasse, as early as possible, for the Teacher Unions to resume to work.

BY THE PUBLIC AFFAIRS UNIT OF FWSC.
