FWSC STAFF RECEIVE TRAINING ON RIGHT TO INFORMATION ACT
Staff of the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) have participated in a workshop on the Right to Information (RTI) Act, Act 989.
The beneficiary staff received training on the provisions and implementation of the RTI Act to equip them and foster a culture of transparency and accountability within the FWSC.
Four officials from the Enforcement, Investigations and Compliance Department of the RTI Commission, namely Jennifer Nyarko, Andrew Adu Boahene, Frederick Kofi Amoah and Jasmine Dodoo, facilitated the training which covered topics such as the overview of the RTI Act, procedures for requesting and accessing information, exemptions, and best practices for implementing the RTI Act in public institutions.
RTI commitment
The leader of the RTI team, Ms Nyarko, emphasised the RTI Commission’s commitment to support public institutions in implementing the RTI Act.
She explained that applicants could request information orally or in writing without giving a reason, and that institutions had 14 days to determine whether an applicant was entitled to the requested information.
Mr Adu Boahene highlighted the Act’s guarantee of access to information from public institutions and relevant private bodies, while Mr Kofi Amoah outlined the RTI Commission’s mandate to promote, monitor, protect, and enforce the right to information granted under the Constitution.
Ms Dodoo discussed exemptions, including information related to the President, Cabinet, law enforcement, and public safety, as well as internal working information of public institutions.
Interactive session
The workshop featured interactive sessions, allowing participants to engage with the presenters to seek further clarification on specific aspects of the RTI Act and share their experiences.
The Director, Finance and Administration Directorate of the FWSC, Dollar Agbenu, emphasised the importance of transparency and accountability in the work of the FWSC, and pledged the commission’s commitment to ensure the effective adherence to the RTI Act.
The workshop, he said, marked an important step towards promoting transparency and accountability within the FWSC and ensuring the effective implementation of the RTI Act in Ghana.
